Zahel Wiener Gemischter Satz Gemischter Satz is a speciality of Vienna, Austria, and is a combination of white grapes entirely harvested and fermented together. This week's {df Wednesday Word on Wine, the Zahel Wiener Gemischter Satz, is a blend - particularly of Griner Veltliner, Riesling, Chardonnay, Grauburgunder, Weissburgunder and Traminer. All of these grapes are considered complementary to one another, an integral part of the Gemischter Satz tradition. As a result, despite field blends generally becoming rarer with time, this example of the Gemischter Satz is actually a very traditional wine; even becoming a key component for the Vienna DAC. This style of wine's inclusion in the current Austrian winemaking zeitgeist is in part due to the Zahel Wiener Gemischter Satz’s very own Richard Zahel, who was the first to market a Wiener Gemischter Satz in 2003. Aged for eight months before bottling, the Zahel Wiener Gemischter Satz ferments using natural yeasts in stainless steel. The lemon- colored wine is just as tangy and acidic as its hue suggests, with fresh stone fruit aromas and a crisp finish. The wine is undoubtedly refreshing, perfect for this final month of hot weather and sunshine. That said, crisp flavors and aromas are also an ideal pairing for crisp weather — ideal for when autumn arrives and the air has a bit more bite to it. The Zahel Wiener Gemischter Satz is exceptionally versatile, but it is a great choice if eating LUSH's Great Lakes Walleye or Grilled Coulette Steak Fries.
